Wi-Fi Expected to Be Up to Five Times Faster In 2015

Samsung Electronics has recently revealed that they have developed a means to transmit Wi-Fi data up to 5 times faster than what is previously possible. According to Samsung, the technology is set to be available for consumer use as early as year 2015.

Wi-Fi speed has been one of the many causes of frustration especially for people surfing the net in public places such as cafes. Thankfully, Samsung Electronics has found a way to change the scenario with company researchers successfully developing 60GHz Wi-Fi which allows transfer rates of 4.6gbps, or 575 MB per second. This rate is 5.3 times much faster than what is currently the maximum speed available for consumer device use (866Mbps, or 108 MB per second).


How Did Samsung Do It?

The 60GHz band was not something that came out of the blue. It was attempted to be exploited previously but failed in that weak penetration properties and path loss prevented long distance sending of data. Samsung has managed to address these issues by combining millimeter-wave circuit design and wide-coverage beam-forming antenna with high-performance modem. The set up eliminates same-channel interference, regardless of how many devices are connecting to one same network.

Samsung’s Plans

Samsung is planning to introduce the 60GHz connectivity into the commercial world come 2015 having it integrated into a variety of their products. These products include medical devices, telecommunications equipment and audio/visual tools. They have also stated that this development will be used to spur The Internet of Things, a new paradigm geared for widespread device connectivity and automation.

Just How Fast is This Connectivity?

Today, Wi-Fi generation makes use of the 2.4Ghz and the 5Ghz areas in the radio spectrum. To give you an idea how fast the 60Ghz band is: a movie sizing up to 1GB will take only 2-3 seconds to be transferred from one device to another. It is also expected to allow streaming of uncompressed high-definition videos on TVs and mobile devices in real-time. That means without any second delay.
