In the 1932 illustrated version of Superman, which was the first time Jerry Siegel and Joe Shutter collaborated, the story of Superman was about a homeless-turned-mad scientist Bill Dunn who invented a chemical which changes him into Superman. He had the power to control and read the minds of people. In the story, Superman killed Dunn and did bad things to control the world.

When World War II was about to end and the U.S. was in the process of developing an atomic bomb, it was also around that time that there was a storyline in the newspaper cartoon strip where Superman visited an atom-smashing cyclotron.
